Тео влюбляется в Эдит и признается в этом Кэнди, которого напрасно принимал за ее жениха. Тео женится на Эдит. Жизнь полковника Блимпа показана одновременно с разных точек зрения: индивидуальной и коллективной, чувственной и моральной, политической и патриотической. История, рассказанная в фильме, - история человека, страны и эволюции некоторых ценностей (чести, сословного духа и т. д.), которым довелось претерпеть болезненные метаморфозы в первой половине XX в. Благодаря этой фантазии реализм картины неизменно отмечен печатью необычной и почти фантастической поэзии. Ее, в частности, излучает присутствие поочередно 3 героинь, сыгранных Деборой Керр. Так создается впечатление, будто Блимп провел всю жизнь в обществе одной женщины, чья неподвластная времени молодость придает повествованию волнующий аромат вечности. Все это богатство формы гармонично вписывается в картину, обладающую сдержанной и тонкой барочной пышностью (у Пауэлла эти понятия не противоречат друг другу) и подчиняющуюся в своем то быстром, то неспешном движении почти музыкальной структуре. Чрезвычайно интересные актерские работы Энтона Уолбрука и Роджера Ливси наполнены скрытым чувством, внутренним достоинством и гуманизмом, не нуждающимся в лишних словах. Экранное старение Роджера Ливси - одно из самых удачных в истории кинематографа.N.В. Министерство информации, подстрекаемое самим Черчиллем, сначала пыталось сорвать съемки. Например, отказалось вызволить из рядов военно-воздушных сил Лоренса Оливье, который должен был исполнить в фильме главную роль. Затем оно задержало выпуск фильма в заграничный прокат под тем предлогом, что он якобы содержит в себе пораженческие настроения, высмеивает армию, а некоторые эпизоды (напр., несоблюдение молодым офицером приказа о времени начала учений) могут спровоцировать нападение, подобное Пёрл-Харбору.
